I've tried lots of new things I never imagined I would be able to do
I am 43 years old and have spent the last 25 years battling with my weight. After years of unsuccessful yo-yo dieting, I found myself dangerously overweight at 151.5 kg with very high blood pressure, pre-diabetic and so unfit that I found simple things difficult, like climbing the 200 steps to my home.
At 40 something clicked and I decided I needed to make some drastic changes to my life. I realised that in order to improve my general health I needed to get my weight and eating under control and also to exercise more and get fit. After lots of research and consulting various doctors and surgeons, I made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery. The surgery was a great success and for the first time in my life, my hunger has an “off switch”, which has meant that I now have more control over my appetite and can make healthier eating choices.
As soon as the surgeon gave me the all clear after my surgery, I came into Curves on the very same day to sign up. My intention was to start an exercise regime which I can maintain and enjoy. I also really liked the idea of regular weigh and measure sessions to keep track of my progress. My first goal was simply to come at least 3-4 times per week and to gradually increase my fitness levels. My starting weight when I joined Curves at the end of November 2016 was 126kg with a BMI of 43.6 and a body fat percentage of 47.8%. Now, 7 months later, I have lost 41kg and my BMI has dropped to 29.4 and my body fat percentage is 35.1%.
I now have healthy blood pressure and am no longer insulin resistant. I have gone down several dress sizes and it has been so exciting being able to buy clothes that I like instead of just trying to find anything that fitted. Apart from the overwhelming sense of wellbeing, the most unexpected and rewarding aspect of being a Curves member has been the amazing support I have received from the lovely trainers and also the other members. We have a great, supportive community and I have found my fellow Curvettes to be a great inspiration. We have such a laugh and are always there for each other with an encouraging word and I find it a great help to feel accountable to someone. I really enjoy all the different classes and challenges too, and have tried lots of new things I never imagined I would be able to do. I have discovered I love yoga and now supplement my Curves workouts with regular yoga classes.
I have also achieved a level of fitness which has enabled me to join my local Rural Fire Brigade and train as a volunteer bush fire-fighter, which I find incredibly rewarding. My goal now is to keep improving, to keep regularly working out and getting stronger. And hopefully inspire others with my story!
